How the estimate is calculated

Charter operators price by the flight hour, then add fees and taxes. The calculator follows the same structure:

  1. Distance. The straight-line (great-circle) distance between the two airports, plus 5% for real-world airway routing.
  2. Flight time. Distance divided by the typical cruise speed of the aircraft class, plus about 18 minutes per flight for taxi, climb and descent. Most operators bill at least 1 hour per flight, so shorter hops are rounded up.
  3. Fuel stops. If the route is longer than the aircraft class’s practical range with passengers, a fuel stop is added (extra time plus another landing fee).
  4. Hourly rate. Flight time multiplied by the typical 2026 rate for that class. The headline figure uses the middle of the range; the low and high figures use each end.
  5. Empty return (one-way trips). The aircraft usually has to fly back to its base. By default we add half of that empty flight, which is common in practice; you can change this.
  6. Waiting time (round trips). For overnight stays we add crew hotel and per-diem costs, or – for long stays where it is cheaper – the cost of flying the aircraft home and back.
  7. Fees and taxes. Landing and handling fees per landing, optional catering and a peak-date premium, then US federal taxes where they apply.

Typical private jet charter rates by aircraft size (2026)

Aircraft class Example aircraft Seats Typical hourly rate
Turboprop Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350 up to 8 $2,000–$3,000
Very light jet Phenom 100, Citation M2 up to 4 $2,500–$3,500
Light jet Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+ up to 7 $3,000–$5,000
Midsize jet Citation Latitude, Hawker 800XP up to 8 $4,000–$6,000
Super midsize jet Challenger 350, Praetor 600 up to 9 $5,500–$8,500
Heavy jet Gulfstream G450, Falcon 2000 up to 13 $8,000–$13,000
Ultra-long-range jet Gulfstream G650ER, Global 7500 up to 16 $12,000–$18,000

Rates are for on-demand charter of the whole aircraft and vary with aircraft age, operator, season and how far the jet must travel to reach you.

Worked example: New York (Teterboro) to Miami

Four passengers, one way, in a light jet, with the typical empty-return allowance:

  • Distance: about 956 nautical miles (1,100 miles), or roughly 1,004 nm after routing.
  • Flight time: 1,004 ÷ 420 knots + 0.3 h ≈ 2 h 41 min.
  • Flight cost at $4,000/hr: $10,756.
  • Half of the empty return: $5,378.
  • Landing and handling at Miami: $650. Subtotal: $16,784.
  • US federal excise tax (7.5%): $1,259. Segment tax (4 × $5.30): $21.
  • Estimated total: about $18,100 (likely range $13,700–$22,400), or roughly $4,500 per person.

What the estimate doesn’t include

  • Non-US taxes. VAT, departure taxes and Europe’s per-passenger levies on private flights (such as the UK’s Air Passenger Duty and France’s private-aviation tax) vary by country and route.
  • Operator-specific charges such as de-icing, overnight hangar space, Wi-Fi, international handling and permits, and daily minimums while an aircraft waits for you.
  • Fuel price swings. Fuel is built into most hourly rates, but some operators add a fuel surcharge when prices rise.

Use the result as a budget guide. A written quote from an operator is the only firm price.

How to lower your charter cost

  • Look for empty legs. Aircraft repositioning without passengers are often sold at a steep discount – but times are fixed and can change.
  • Pick the smallest aircraft that fits. Use the comparison table above: going one size down often saves 20–40%.
  • Fly round trip within the same day or two. The aircraft doesn’t fly home empty, and crew costs stay low.
  • Avoid peak dates. Holiday weekends and big events push rates up and limit availability.
  • Book from an airport where aircraft are based. Less empty flying to reach you means a lower price.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this charter cost calculator?

It’s designed to land within the range most operators would quote for the same trip. Actual quotes depend on the exact aircraft, where it’s based, availability on your dates and the operator’s own fees, so treat the result as a planning estimate, not a price.

Why is a one-way charter so expensive?

You usually pay for some or all of the aircraft’s empty flight home. That’s why a round trip in the same week can cost only a little more than a one-way – unless you find an empty-leg deal.

Is the price per person or for the whole plane?

For the whole aircraft. The per-passenger figure simply divides the total by your group size, so a full plane is much better value per seat.

What taxes apply to a private charter flight?

Within the US, charters carry a 7.5% federal excise tax plus a per-passenger segment tax ($5.30 per segment in 2026). Flights to or from the US pay a per-passenger international facilities tax ($23.40 in 2026) instead of the 7.5%. Other countries have their own taxes, which this calculator doesn’t estimate.
